The same yet changed 1999, Undisclosed Basement, Shanghai

Yang Fu Dong, Alexander Brandt, Xu Zhen, Yang Zhen Zhong

The title of the exhibition is a Chinese idiom that describes a scenery where all things are the way they were, but the people have changed. This photography exhibition is bearing witness to the dramatic social change that was underway at the turn of the Millennium in Shanghai. Numerous artworks in the exhibition focused on a desire to test the limits of social norms,
involving nudity and grotesque visuals. For fear of being forbidden by the police, the exhibition was organized in secret in a basement at an undisclosed location. Unfortunately, the event was reported and eventually closed by the authorities before the opening.
